Isolation of Antibacterial Compound from Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) against Enteropathogenic Bacteria

Hexane, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol extracts of Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) were analyzed for determination antibacterial activity against enteric-pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Shizella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa Vibrio cholerae using agar well diffusion method. Only extract all them exhibited an inhibiting effect on the development tested strains. By disc method, chosen pathogenic examined their pattern antibiotic susceptibility. A comparison antibiotics was performed. It discovered that found to be remarkable sensitivity test pathogens, total 37 fractions obtained from fractionization through column chromatography 4 major 13minor compounds Thin Layer Chromatography Antibacterial different determined by spot assay technique. The 1, 7, 13, 21 demonstrated greatest when pathogens out collected. Octadecanoic acid methyl ester in fraction number 13 according results Gas Mass Specrometry. Stearic Ocimum sanctum has been recommended human trials various bacterial infections.
